Spicy Stir-Fried Rice Cakes: A Classic Korean Street Food

For those who enjoy Korean dramas, spicy stir-fried rice cakes are certainly no stranger. It is one of the classic street foods in Korea. The slender rice cakes are enveloped in a bright red sauce. When you take a bite, they are chewy, tangy, sweet, and slightly spicy. In fact, the method of making spicy stir-fried rice cakes is quite simple, and the most important ingredient is Korean chili sauce. Although it is called stir-fried rice cakes, they are actually cooked rather than stir-fried. The low-fat and low-sodium cooking method makes it healthier.
Ingredients for Spicy Stir-Fried Rice Cakes: 1 bag of hot pot rice cakes, 2 tablespoons of Korean chili sauce, 2 slices of cabbage, half an onion, half a carrot, 2 spring onions, 2 garlic cloves, 2 tablespoons of soy sauce, 1 tablespoon of sugar, a pinch of black pepper, a pinch of salt, and a sprinkle of black sesame seeds.


Method for Spicy Stir-Fried Rice Cakes:


Step 1: Remove the packaging from the hot pot rice cakes and separate any that are stuck together.


Step 2: Slice the onion, carrot, and cabbage into thin strips, and cut the spring onions into sections.


Step 3: Crush the garlic cloves into a paste and place in a small bowl. Add Korean chili sauce, chili powder, soy sauce, sugar, black pepper, and a small amount of salt to the bowl and mix well to create the sauce.


Step 4: Pour an appropriate amount of water into a pot, add the sauce, and stir evenly. Bring to a boil over high heat.


Step 5: Add the rice cakes and cook over medium heat.


Step 6: Cook for about 5 minutes until the rice cakes float to the surface.


Step 7: Add the sliced onion, carrot, and cabbage, and mix well.


Step 8: Add the sliced spring onions.


Step 9: Stir continuously while cooking until the sauce thickens, then sprinkle with black sesame seeds and stir-fry evenly until ready to serve.
